This past weekend, I had the chance to volunteer at the New Britain Museum of American Art during their first Sidewalk Art Chalk Festival. I assisted with registering artists and families as they arrived to claim a square of pavement to create their own chalk artwork. The event was lively, with music playing and food trucks serving the community.
In addition to the chalk drawings, the museum offered more creative experiences. Children could make their own hats through a crafting activity, and inside the museum, there was a pastel drawing room for anyone needing a break from the heat. Soft pastels and reference materials were provided for those who wanted guidance. The New Britain Public Library also had a presence at the event, offering resources to visitors. After completing my volunteer shift, I took the opportunity to get my CT Art Trail passport. According to the CT Art Trail website, the trail is a nationally recognized collection of 30 world-class museums, nature centers, and historic sites that promote Connecticut’s rich cultural resources as part of a travel experience. The passport offers free admission to all 30 sites and costs only $35. It also includes discounts, gifts, and other benefits.
I used my passport right away at the New Britain Museum, which has an excellent collection of American Art. Their galleries include standout pieces in American Illustration and American Impressionism. The museum also has a well-stocked gift shop and a wide variety of programs for visitors. I purchased a print and a beautifully designed postcard during my visit. What was cool about my purchase is that with my passport, it included a 10% discount on all gift shop merchandise within the New Britain Gift shop. It has a great selection of nick-nacks, clothing, books, prints and much more awesome things. I would especially note that there were a great variety of things for kids as a great way to teach them about art, as well!
This experience inspired me to start a weekly blog series where I share my visits to each museum along the CT Art Trail. I also plan to post short videos on TikTok highlighting each location and what makes it special. I believe it is important for the public to visit these cultural spaces. They offer valuable experiences for children, families, and artists seeking inspiration, ideas, and community connections. I encourage everyone to get their own passport and make time to visit these museums. There is always something to gain from engaging with art in person.
